Diagnostic services

Diagnostic services include routine dental exams, regular radiographs, and limited exams as needed.

A child’s first dental visit is recommended within 6 months after the first tooth erupts, or by 12 months old.

Most kids need dental exams and cleanings every 6 months. This will ensure that no new cavities are growing in the pits and grooves of the teeth. If your child has had a recent exam but there is a tooth bothering them, or something you’re not sure about, a quick limited exam can focus on one issue and determine the cause and the best recommended treatment.

Radiographs are an important way to diagnose cavities early, possibly even soon enough to reverse them! Did you know a single dental radiograph contains as much radiation exposure as eating four bananas, or about a 1-hour flight on an airplane? Radiographs are an important part of an exam, but may not be necessary every time depending on factors affecting your child’s risk of cavities.
